Boxer Facing Consequences for Failing to pay Child Support
On behalf of The Law Offices of Cindy D. Sackrin posted in Child Support on Thursday, February 25, 2016.
The consequences of the failure to pay child support can be far reaching. A former champion boxer is facing the consequences of a failure to pay $800,000 in child support. The former champion boxer owes overdue child support for his 14-year old daughter. The mother of his 14-year child is represented in Florida. He is now facing suspension from boxing and fines for an unrelated boxing issue.
He may also, however, be facing consequences related to boxing for signing a boxing license application in another state stating he does not owe unpaid child support. The former champion boxer provided the explanation for the application that the application did not refer to his unpaid Florida child support obligations. The boxing application from the other state provides that a boxer that owes child support cannot obtain a boxing license or will have their boxing license suspended.
The former champion boxer's testimony from a recent Florida child support hearing revealed that he spent the earnings from the boxing match in the other state on himself and his other debts. He owes greater than $779,000 in delinquent child support but did pay $12,500 in child support over a 4-month period. In a statement, the former champion boxer objects to the amount of support he is required to pay for his daughter. In Florida, there are 650,000 child support cases according to the Department of Revenue. Parents were billed $2 billion in child support in 2015 and 81 percent of the child support was collected, leaving approximately $360 million in child support uncollected in Florida during 2015.
Child support is a significant issue for children and parents collecting and receiving child support. As a result, there are a number of different resources provided by the Florida family law process to help ensure receipt of child support and enforce child support orders, however, child support modification options may also be available in some circumstances which is why it is helpful for parents and families to be familiar with all the options available to them.
