Florida Woman Receives Substantial Divorce Settlement

The family law process seeks to provide a guide to couples and families working through the difficulties associated with divorce. This process was utilized in a recent Florida case that has one woman on firm financial footing.

A south Florida mother, and former model, recently received a $13.4 million divorce settlement. Six years following the couple’s divorce, the woman will receive the divorce settlement from her ex-husband with whom she shares three children and was married to for 16 years. A representative for the woman noted that the settlement was in the best interests of the children.

The woman’s ex-husband, a real estate developer, was recently sentenced in Canada, where he was living, to four years in prison for contempt of court following a $1.7 million child support order he failed to pay. The woman’s ex-husband will not have to serve the prison sentence under the recent settlement.

Reaching divorce settlements can sometimes be a contentious process. Though settling matters can be simple when the parties can speak to each other calmly and make decisions that are fair, this is not always possible when dealing with property division, alimony, child custody, and child support. When determining child support and child custody, the best interests of the child is used as a guiding factor to help keep the focus on outcomes that are best for the children involved.

Couples are encouraged to negotiate and reach agreements throughout the divorce process, which can help avoid delays, high costs and acrimony. The family law process is designed to help facilitate settlement and agreements with which all parties can live. When couples are unable to reach agreements between themselves, the formal legal process may be needed to help arrive at a resolution. Though divorce can be difficult, family law attorneys are available to help couples and families resolve their differences and focus on resolution.
