What is Divorce Mediation and is it Right for me?

Divorce typically involves a predictable set of issues but if you are unfamiliar with the process, it can be overwhelming during an already emotional and difficult time. You may have heard others use the term mediation in the context of divorce and wondered about the process of divorce mediation. During the divorce process, divorcing spouses are permitted to resolve many important considerations as a couple. Sometimes during the process, however, disputes arise.
As many people know, divorce disputes can be emotionally and financially draining and consume an extensive amount of time as well. If you are in the entering the divorce process, you may wonder if divorce mediation is a good idea for you. The answer may depend on a variety of factors. In general, the mediation process can help ensure the couple remains focused on resolving outstanding divorce-related issues.
It is important to note that, with the approval of the court, couples are able to make many divorce-related determinations, such as property division, alimony, child custody and visitation, child support to some extent, retirement and tax considerations. It is generally regarded as preferable for the parties, their children and everyone involved for divorcing couple to be able to resolve outstanding divorce-related issues together. If they are unable to do so, the court will step in to help. Another option is to present contested issues to a mediator which usually done with the help of attorneys who understand the law and the circumstances.
There are many important factors to consider when determining if divorce mediation is right for you. In any event, the couple's ability to maintain a workable relationship during the divorce process can benefit their post-divorce relationship, fairness and the best interests of any children the couple may have. Knowledge of mediation in general and the divorce mediation process can help you decide if divorce mediation is a good option for you.
